Tips on Downsizing in Preparing to Move
Downsizing is difficult because of all the memories associated with the family home. Possessions have been accumulated over a number of years and parting with them can be a struggle. The thought of moving can seem overwhelming, physically exhausting and emotionally draining. However with careful planning one can settle quickly and comfortably in their new lifestyle choice.
Ideally, start planning a year before the actual move by answering the following key questions.
- What will my new lifestyle look like? For example, will I be preparing daily meals, how much entertaining am I planning to do etc.
- What is my moving budget?
- How much space will I have in my new home?
Preparing for the move:
- Prepare floor plan for the new home and determine the amount of cupboard/ closet space that will be available. Choose large items such as furniture that is comfortable, that you use on a regular basis and will fit in your new space.
- Schedule 2-3 hours per week to sift and sort through items.
- Sorting piles will include: Taking – these are items you treasure most and will use. Ask yourself “how often has the item been worn or used in the last year?” If it hasn’t been used then it is unlikely to be used. Donating – consider gifting some of your treasures to family/friends and watch them enjoy your gifts. Some items can be donated to your favorite charities. Selling - these are items that may generate some income. Discuss with a reputable auction house. Garage sales are time consuming and generally don’t generate much income. Rubbish – these are items that could be recycled or need to be disposed.
Most common mistake with most moves is underestimating the amount of available new space. Taking too much is costly as one has to pay for the cost of the move, storage and then later disposal.
Remember a well planned move will allow you to settle quickly and comfortably in your new home while decreasing costs. Asking friends and family to help will likely cause stress for everyone. Call a professional who can take the stress out of downsizing and moving.
